Ilford HP5+ ISO 400 35mm Black & White Film - 36 Exposures

Applications - Outdoor/low light scenes, Sports, Photojournalism.

It is ideal for action, available light and general purpose photography. It is designed to give optimum results under most lighting conditions and when processed in a wide range of developers.HP5 Plus is rated at ISO 400/27° when exposed to daylight. HP5 Plus has the fine grain, good edge contrast and sharpness required to give excellent image quality.

These characteristics give prints with outstanding brightness and a full tonal range.

HP5 Plus, though, is more than an ISO 400/27° film. By extending development with some developers, for example ILFORD ILFOTEC HC and ILFORD MICROPHEN, it is possible to use meter settings up to EI 3200/36. This makes HP5 Plus the ideal film for all photography where factors such as poor lighting and moving subjects demand greatest emulsion sensitivity. HP5 Plus is compatible with all current processing systems including those which give the standard short fixing and washing times. There is no need to change standard processing techniques when switching to HP5 Plus, or any other ISO 400/27° film. HP5 Plus is very robust during processing, giving excellent results under most conditions, and will also tolerate processing conditions that are less than ideal. HP5 Plus 35mm film is supplied in DX Coded cassettes, so the film speed of ISO 400/27° is set automatically on automatic 35mm cameras.

Vibey

I had a go with this, just to see what all the fuss is about (it's an extremely popular film) and was pleasantly surprised with how much of my roll came back with very positive results. My hit rate isn't typically all that good!

There is a particular vibe to it (the contrast is kind of nuts and the grain is very intense), but if that's the sort of thing you want, it's extremely good at it. It also simply doesn't seem to care when it's dark, which is quite the magic trick.

HP5 Vs Kodak TriX

Film choice is as subjective as trying to define 'love'. It is infinitely subjective, overflowing with nuances and personal preferences. Within the preceeding context, other variables are also at play, such as the lens and chemistry used in conjunction with the film and, of course, the cost.
For four decades, Kodak Tri-X has been my first choice B+W film, mainly because of its deep blacks, higher contrast and obvious grain structure. When I couldn't get Tri-X, Ilford HP5 was my second choice.
The second choice in this case wasn't second place; Ilford HP5 is just different, but different in a compelling way. Ilford HP5 tends to be less contrasty [but 'even' and retains detail in blacks and highlights] and has finer grain, even when pushed from 1600 to 3200.
Now, in 2024, because Kodak Tri-X is mostly more expensive than Ilford HP5, [ HP5] <<< is my first choice.
In summary, both Kodak Tri-X and Ilford HP5 excel at recording images on film, just in different ways.

Christmas gift

I bought the film as a Christmas gift for my son. They arrived promptly and were well packaged, but I can’t give feedback on how good they are as my son hasn’t yet used them.

Best B&W Film!

HP5 is my go to B&W film, it is extremely versatile and gives great results in all different lighting conditions. All ways have some stock in the fridge ready to take out on a shoot.
