Why We Love Kodak
At Stuck in Film we sell stocks from most manufacturers; Ilford, Fuji, Harman, Foma, CineStill, Candido. We shoot it all so that we can confidently give advice to customers about each emulsion. But some films we naturally pick up more often than others. When I’m packing a bag for the weekend, the roll I reach for is nearly always in a yellow box.

Where it all started
My first memory of Kodak is my dad loading a roll of Kodak Gold into his Zenit. Then the wait. Dropping it off at the lab and waiting for the prints to come back so we could see what he’d got.
That feeling never really goes away. We develop hundreds of rolls a week and I still enjoy seeing the negatives come out of the processor.
So when did it click?
New York, 2004. My first proper portrait shoot. I shot 35mm and medium format side by side on Kodak Portra NC and VC. When the results came back, that was it. I never looked back!

Portra NC and VC were retired some time ago now, but Portra carried on.
What’s in my bag
For everyday shooting I rotate between Gold 200, UltraMax 400, ColorPlus and Pro Image, with a roll of Tri-X every now and then. To be frank, I love them all.
For special projects I pick up EKTACOLOR PRO (Portra). I’ve always been a big fan. The latitude is brilliant, the colours are neutral, there’s loads of detail and skin tones look lovely.
If I could only shoot one Kodak stock forever, it’d be EKTACOLOR PRO 400 (Portra 400). The 160 and 800 are great too, but 400 is the one I’d keep. If a mate who’d never shot film asked me what it looks like, I’d tell them lovely, light and airy pastel colours. Yum yum!
Kodakchrome and Aerochrome, pretty please
If anyone at Kodak is reading this, bring back Kodachrome and Aerochrome. We’ll be the first in the queue.
